Windows 7

I was playing some Final last night, and one of our guys was playing on Windows 7. Since it's pretty much confirmed the Beta was leaked to build hype, I figure why not give it a Download and install somewhere.

Link @ TPB for Windows 7. I'll see how the grab gets on this 2.8GB DVD Image, and see how it runs on a moderate PC setup. Drop any feedback you might have from tinkering.

Theres also going to be an open beta sometime early this year...I had it installed on my system for a few days b/c I needed to format and my Vista DVD (yes I bought Vista) was at my parents so I needed an OS for a couple of days :) Nothing much has changed right now......but there are lots of stuff to manage to change around and more stuff to come

Ive read a few reports its faster then xp and vista :o Vista is my love child at the moment and stable and secure as a rock or as good as windows has ever been. But il'd like to see how fast it actually runs considering all the slack they received from Vista and the work im sure they would be putting into it under the hood.

My torrent would not load for the life of me, and I have another Hard Drive avail to partition since I got that RMA back. I might at least move my Nix boot on the new drive, and tinker w/ the 7 image once I get my Nix boot on a new drive, and before the old drive goes in the MythTv b0x. :bunny:

I waited to try the official link, and while it's up, it's borked. I followed the steps on, in IE mind you, and the 'download' page takes me to an error page, with 2 links. Way to Fail until you paste the URL manually.

I got the download running now. Be ready to give up an email addy, and install a control to download the Beta.

I have an install on my test machine, and so far, I'm locked into 640x480 Resolution in 16 Colors. Needless to say, this sucks.

The Test Machine is a Dell Dimension 3000:

P4 CPU

Integrated Intel 965G Video Card

I would have thought onboard Dell Video would be in OK shape for getting detected, but I was purely wrong. The date on the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter Driver is 6/21/2006. I would have thought some newer drivers would be in play. Just for the hell of it, I'll install the XP Drivers and see what happens. Fail is what happens. :sail:

Here is a Video 'Fix' but it's Wonky @ best.

My OS install process was pretty quick, maybe 1.5 hours, tops.

When I do get some non-shitty Video going, I can peep these Keyboard Shortcuts and Tips

Awesome Man.

I got my video working on that Dell btw. The installer Fails, but if you point the Device Manager driver updater to the C:\Intel Folder, and the Updater accepted the drivers, and asked to reboot.

The Intel Install Wizard failed, as it was doing an OS check, and Build 7000 was too high I imagine.

After I removed my Previous OS Files via Disk Cleanup, Windows 7 is 8GB of space on my test rig. Since I have a Video Driver installed, I figured I'd re-run the Performance Assessment Test (Properties of My Computer then click your score to redo). Once I hit the DX Test, my Dell testbed hard locks like clockwork.

had it running on my test box

specs

intel 2.4ghz quad core

3gb ddr2 667mhz ram

asus nvidia 9600gt

western digital 500gb sata HDD

install took me like 3 hours cause i was working on a project for work, once in a while i walked over to click next and stuff

ran pretty smooth, it still needs some work on the user friendlyness.... it's not perfect (it still being the beta has a lot to do with that)

its a lot of things vista should have been but there is still a lot of room for improvements.

We'll the RC just leaked, im in the middle of downloading a few torrents at the moment and then i'll be grabbing this to try it out. Seems to be getting pretty fave reviews on most of the releases since the start of this thread so i'll let you know.

Cool Man. I only gave it a run on the test office rig. I just got my dual-boot happy with XP by fixing RAM timings, so I am making up for lost gaming time from working that issue out. :bunny:

Hmm, I think I will Ghost my XP Image and try Windows 7 on my main Dual-boot, as it fairs well for media sharing to consoles.

I have some HD Vids I'd like to stream from the 360, and I'd rather not make the Mythrig a Dual-boot, as it's plenty busy with TV grabs and game encodes.

Speaking of game encodes, I should test my 360 Rip to encode ability since I can use a VCR and the living room to play on. I also have the stereo gear downstairs ready for hookup in the living room. :)

Well, after seeing Windows 7 RC will be free for a year, I am now scheduling to install this next week in my Gameb0x.

The software will not expire until 1 June 2010, giving testers more than a year's free access to Windows 7.

I'll throw in a 3rd Drive and give it a go (then edit Grub for Tri-boot). The pros have been pretty encouraging so far, and a free year to try it is pretty nice. Fallout 3 DLC is out next week too, so I'm thinking Dual-Display install / games thanks to VCR-In.

I actually downloaded it and installed it on the bootcamp partition of my MacBook Pro. It worked for a while, but one day I booted the computer and it told me no was found... so I restarted and held down the option key to get to the bootdisk choices... Chose my mac partition and it worked fine, but the windows side was gimped. Turns out somewhere along the way, Windows made itself the default startup disk, and also corrupted itself, so all shit hit the fan. I wiped the partition and put XP back on there
