Ok guys,

 

Here is the direction I think I am going. The attached is the build specs for TWO computers.

 

L33 needs a new box as well (Thats what she said! -Michael Scott), so here is my crack at dual boxes for a nice price. The reason I need feedback quickly is because I am about to hit the clicker and order the mofo.

 

All feedback welcomed, just be quick pretty plx?

So there you have it, 2 systems in the medium price range. I was seriously considering the HD6970 video card, and in fact, I intended to buy it. I screwed up in my cart and had the 6950's in there when I completed my order. After more research while I was on hold waiting to change my order to the 6970s I decided I would roll the 6950s anyways. Basically there will be almost no difference as along as I get a nice clock on the 6950

2 system bugdet build: alt 1

 

 

notes:

1.) cost of memory can be cut (I like mushkin) and expanded to 16GB per system.

2.) mobo supporting am3+ and am3 sockets could be a risk factor. In this case the manufacturer seems to denote that it does support both.

some assumptions:

1.) power supply being carried over from previous system

2.) peripherals being carried over from previous system (on that premise the rom-drive can be excluded for a 2x18.99 savings.

Well I got the boxes in yesterday and started the very slow process of building them. The first box too forever and a year and it is still not complete but here is what I ran into.

 

  1. Not enough SATA power connections
  2. Windows 7 install went horribly wrong. Couldn't install when raid was on due to SATA dvd drive on that controller. I said the hell with it and turned off the raid controller and installed Win7 on 1 SSD for now just to keep forward progress. I figured I could just re-install once I figured out the issue during my box install. Funny part is, the speed of just 1 SSD is retarded.

 

So far these are the issues. will post more details as time goes on.

Issues on L33's box

 

I am still hunting a stability issue on this rig. I thought I had it nailed to a bad RAM module but after more testing I am not sold. I really suspect the power supply.... That thing is making some weak ass noises from time to time. It claims to be a 650w and my calculations of the draw says that should be fine. I have my box for a reference as I recycled my Zalman PSU and I am having NO issues with 2 additional harddrives and a harder clock. I have a BFG Tech 650w from the spare bin I am going to try out to see if it can settle some of these stability issues.

 

In addition, there is plus side. Now that I figured out the RAID driver issue, I am going to nuke the install and rebuild in RAID config. The new PSU has enough connectors to power everything and in addition, it should do it well? Yea, that's what I am hoping for.

 

 

Status of my box;

 

Got my OS installed in RAID 0 on the SSD's. Turns out all of the raid controller drivers that shipped with the mboard and even on their site were 32bit. Called MSI up, they hooked me up with the addy for the right drivers and BOOM RAID 0 SSD's s0n! I love 1GB of transfer rate :P

 

Got an eazy overclock in place @ 4Ghz on all 6 cores. Not pushing it's ballz in yet.

 

Still tweaking drivers and playing around

 

 

Server Rig;

 

Got this thing back together with an updated PSU as well. I found an Ultra 600w in the spare bin. Once we get some life into that box it's game on! I mean exactly that... Obviously any additional work to that machine takes a back burner to L33's box. /me crosses fingers and prays that it's not a mobo.....

Beat me to checking the 12v lines and output. Have you run a Memtest and let it go for a few hours? I had some bad stick that had some access issues near the end of the stick memory.

 

Also, I recommend trying a linux live CD boot. Very helpful when trying to get a feel on a hardware vs software config conflict. Other than that, I'd maybe try switching the card with another machine. Preferably a lower power eating one.

Swapped PSU's with no improvement

 

Swapped Mem with no improvement

 

Underclocked CPU with no improvement

 

 

I did however notice when I tried to remove the heatsink as I thought maybe I need to make sure everything is seated well, the cpu came out of the socket with the heatsink. Makes me curious. I will be trying that out a little later. I just got my box back online since the PSU swap.

I think I nailed it!

 

Pending more testing, I think were good....

 

Time will tell, but I have had about 45mins BSOD free :)

 

Obviously there will be a full report if this works.

Her system is still going strong!

 

2 things

 

#1 The CPU issue was a possible source of my issues with the poor latch on the mobo that allowed the cpu to come out of the socket while i was trying to remove the stock heatsink that I put on.

 

#2 I also didn't hook up one of the 6pin PCE-E power connectors to the mobo. See, my vid card requires 2 6 pin power, and for some reason the mobo is asking for one as well (total of 3, 2 on vid card and 1 on mobo). I was pulling my PSU out of her box to put in the old one and I noticed I had it hooked up and for some reason at that very moment my mind traveled back in time and I visually saw my mobo from yesterday before I pulled my PSU to test in her box. What I saw was that was NOT hooked up. So I rinsed and repeated and so far so good

 

All in all, not sure what did it and I have no interest in re-creating the problem to find out. But so far I have had 0 BSODs since these 2 changes.

 

 

 

PS> 12v rail was still 11.88v with the Epower PSU

 

PS>PS> She is back to 16GB of RAM btw

 

PS>PS>PS> My b0x idles @ 30C and is 100% silent :0
