Oculus Rift VR

Recommended Posts

Quoting myself with a post from Overclockers.com.au:

I have an Oculus CV1 and just picked up a Rift S. I think the visual quality is a huge improvement over CV1. Hand tracking overall seems good, except for in very dark situations. I used to run a 3 sensor setup with my CV1.

Biggest current Rift S issue is related to setting floor height. Unlike the CV1 and a foot and inches (or centimeter) binding, the Rift S floor setup has you touch the floor. Problem here, is for sitting, you are super low and below in-game standing height with no means to set your floor below what you can physically touch (cannot no-clip irl your floor). I hope this is resolved soon since it is also an inhibiting factor for any persons unable to stand up, when playing VR. It's an inconvenience for me, since I want to sit and play but accessibility wise, I consider it a big deal.

Passthrough is quite nice too. Headphones plug in on the front left side of the Rift S headset. I use earbuds since my over the ear headphones do not go well with the rift on.
FYI when I say quality of display is better, I mean in-vr text is clearer on Rift S without glasses, than they are in CV1 with glasses on. I also put glasses on for the Rift S and it's super crisp. That's a pretty large win, imho.
Faults: Yes the static line flashes are a real issue. Mildly annoying but not a deal breaker for me. The improvements so far outrank the cons of sitting and static flash. The height should be addressable and possibly the static issue as well, via software fixes.

In addition, 1.39 beta has given better hand tracking with the controller range.  I was firing off bow and arrow shots like a beast last night.
Also for the issue about height.  There are several games that have an option of standing or seated mode.  This looks to directly handle the issue with being very close to the floor, once you set your height to sitting, while sitting.

I'll link to an Oculus forum thread about height and accessibility I commented in too.  Highlights being, VRChat has height adjust via seated or standing mode while Vader Immortal does not have seated mode.

I still pop into VR here and there.  I did just pickup an Oculus Quest this week.

I hear there may be a Quest 2 coming out soon but the actual Quest and Rift S have been slim stocked for months.  I have been wanting to check out the stand alone headset and also how well it works for Oculus Link as a desktop headset.

I only have a few hours in so far with the quest, but it's damn nice so far.  As I also have a Rift S, I was pleasantly able to see my WidMovr lenses fit into the Quest too.  The included charge cable works fine out of the box as a Link cable, so you can save money buying a USB 3 cable as well.  I picked up the 64 GB model of the Quest.  While some titles you will have to buy again on Quest, if you have them on Rift, I was happy to see all of the Vader Immortal games, Space Pirate Trainer, Raccoon Lagoon, Eleven Table Tennis VR, The Climb were unlocked on my Quest since I had them on Rift.

While I'm on the subject, those Quest games are for when you play in stand alone mode, not connected to a PC.  When using a Link cable, your regular oculus rift library titles are available, as would be SteamVR content.

As for the Quest headset, it has the mounting system of the Rift CV but with lenses of quality to the Rift S.  The USB cable is also much more thin than the Rift S cable.  When I'm sitting in my chair, the Rift S cable will run along my back and kind of tug on the headset.  This is less so when using the Quest wired.

I've been playing wired so I don't have good battery metrics yet.  I will say for you night time VR heads, that you may want an IR light.  I got a $15 one for my desk and it took care of the tracking issues I would have at night with it losing track of hands and taking me into guardian setup.

I forgot to add. You will still see god rays / light surrounding images with white text on a black background.  I don't get bothered by it but wanted to remember mentioning it.
