Pic0o
Just dropping a light reminder to grab your windows updates. 10 new XP Pro criticals today and a reboot requested. Eek, it looks like there is a nice Multi-Browser Hard Drive Contents Exploit too. On a good note in exploit land, Chinese Authorities arrest Virus designer. Authorities said it is the first time they have made an arrest involving a major internet virus that originated in China. The virus can steal account names and passwords of online game players and popular chat sites. It was listed as the worst computer virus last year by a major Chinese anti-virus company. Li also produced the "Wuhan Boy" virus, "Wuhan Boy 2005" virus and "QQ Tail" virus, sources say. Good to the arrest, considering how much shady traffic tends to originate from that region. Considering this person confessed to building 'ploits for Money, it demonstrates the severity of someone to shut these operations down ASAP, instead of feeding the delusion of immunity and easy money. I'm @ work, as we continue to wait for the additional foot of snowfall. :o Link to comment
Pic0o
This will be the index topic for Windows Updates. I'm doing an update now in the office, and show 11 High Priority Updates. I did a run on the home PC and only had 3, so I was off in the office. Give your Win Rig an update when possible. Link to comment
Pic0o
More updates await you. 12 is a big old number to roll out. Pic0o
Speaking again of updates, we noticed that here in the office, that using the /console switch for the mstsc command no longer works, and has been replaced with /admin. What a pain in the ass. I was wondering why I could not hit the active console session. It seems to be due to installing XP SP3, Vista SP1, or any other recent SP for XP and Beyond Machines. I have no clue why they had to remove /console, since /admin seems to perform the same way. Here is a Technical rundown on the changee but I don't care, as listed below: Make /console a pointer to /admin, holy shit man. Link to comment
Pic0o
More Big Updates for your Windows rigs. Be ready for a reboot, per my buddy. Rolling some updates out now. I show 7 High Priority Updates. Details on the Updates Link to comment
Pic0o
I installed these updates on my Office PC with a Core 2 Duo, and now it hard-locks on Normal Windows Boot. :o All other machines I have done have been good, this is the first Core 2 Duo PC I have applied updates on. Getting ready to purge updates and check for bootability. I fixed this on my Machine, as the Nvidia Drivers somehow got gimped upon my Reboot, as Safe and VGA Mode worked fine, so I uninstalled my Nvidia Drivers, and got the Oct 15th ones. Pic0o
Speaking of more Updates, there is a Critical Flaw that got patched outside the regular MS Schedule. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2333177,00.asp You will most likely need to reboot after applying this patch. Pic0o
Yay to no Reboot. Pretty sure XP heads need to, as I think was the case for us. Patchin Kat's PC now, as I think she might have forgot. :bunny: -done- Just as you think you might be safe, 0-day flaws are here for X-mas! "Our investigation of these attacks so far has verified that they are not successful against customers who have applied the workarounds listed in this advisory," Microsoft said. Meanwhile, security experts say that massive, widespread attacks taking advantage of these security holes are not likely. "The exploits that are currently circulating aren't that reliable. They don't even work 50 percent of the time," Greenbaum said. "Currently, it's not an issue to panic over." Microsoft is also currently working on repairing another vulnerability in WordPad Text Converter, a default component of Windows operating systems, on Word 97 files. The bug affects numerous versions of Windows, including 2000, XP, Server 2000, Vista and Server 2008. This may be valid, until maybe, Tuesday. Edited December 12, 2008 by Pic0o Link to comment

Pic0o
My buddy told me the Local News covered the IE Issue, and 'advised you to change to an alternate browser until the issue is resolved'. I crossed out the stupid part. MS Patches to 'fix' the issue. Let us hope it does not lead to a bigger exploit. :o Link to comment
JeT
Christ I have to patch sooooo much. Haven't updated in like over a month. I still find it funny tho, that I've never had a virus or been exploited. Most of the time it comes down to common sense computing. Well common sense at least for techies I guess. Link to comment
Pic0o
I hear that, until you are playing an MMO and goto a Fansite without Firefox Addons. :o Kat got hit by an infection spread through a hijacked ad server for a Final site this summer. From that point on, Noscript and AdBlock Plus are mandatory. The crappy part though, is that these vulnerabilities are more commonly getting on 'trusted' domains and spreading too. I have a feeling 2009 will be the year of the embedded object on big domains. One could hope people put IT in their Budget before something breaks, but that's just not likely. Link to comment

Hmmm... yeah I always use firefox, no script, and adblock. Very handy at preemptive stopping. Link to comment
