Wireless Routers

So our wireless router is pretty old and isn't working so well these days. It's a 4 port linksys, pretty basic. We aren't looking to break the bank but I was thinking it'd be wise of us to get more like 8 ports. Should we stick with linksys or try a new brand? Some one told us Netgear was good but I don't wanna go spend the money without ever trying one.

And are there any brands we should be sure to avoid?

I've had good luck with the Linksys by Cisco routers. They seem to be a good improvement over the purple tier linksys hardware. Cisco buying them has improved the quality quite a bit.

I also highly recommend getting a N-brodcast wireless router. Kat's Laptop does just shy of 7MB/s over wireless (for LAN transfers) and since you'd average around 10MB/s on wired, that's pretty nice.

Only issue I've had lately, is my router doesn't like to load the web interface after extended up time, but it does continue to run ok. I don't have to do the 'Reset to make wifi work again' crap I had to do with the older wireless routers.

Btw, I have a Linksys WRT310N.

I'm not sure about what brands to avoid, but do a search of a specific model you may be interested in, for example, if you put into google "my XXX router overheats" and you find loads of situations where router XXX is overheating, then be wary of it. So often I've bought an electronic product, and I just didn't think to search for common problems prior to spending my cash.

The interface on some routers can be really trashy--this too can easily be googled.

If you want to get an 8 port router, you might be best just to get a "switch" which gives you more ports and then buy a router with 4 ports. Switches are pretty cheap and the advantage with them is you can have a router with four ports in one room, then a switch with more ports, in another room. Thus you could have two rooms which act as hubs to plug computers in.

What sort of connection is this for, fibre/dsl?
