As the article mentions, disabling the CPU is not much of an anti-theft feature, since you can remove the HDD and still get the data. Secondly, what use would this be in a desktop? Features like this are certainly from the side of 'More harm than good', as it absolutely reeks of an exploit to come. Over a 3G network? So this is some free, open-access network, or I have to pay a fee for 3G, on something I never asked for in the first place? Who would want this in their server / desktop machines? While I cannot resist thinking about it, this sounds very much like Clipper Chip 2.0. Also, I wonder if with that 3G coverage, if you'd win a GPS receiver too? It's not an anti theft feature, its more along the lines of a "I have a new idea to sell more CPUs" feature. Though, much like the current tracking features you'll find in some laptops, it will probably be disabled by default, whilst turning it on will permanently enable it. They could use an encryption key embedded into the CPU, which once revoked makes your data useless, but then again glossing over the fact that would be complicated to implement, this creates disaster recovery problems, and on top of that if someone steals your computer in order to get at your data, they could just keep it off a 3G network until they have a dump. Maybe a better idea would just to be to lock your doors. I'm more interested in the pending release of AMD CPUs, rumours are we'll see Bulldozer in April, though the Fuzion stuff sounds real good if you don't need a high end graphics card.

    Windows 7

Virtualbox + seamless mode should be fine and cheaper for a home user though.
  5. I say if your employees can't figure out tunneling, they shouldn't have SSH to yer box in the first place. This negates any drawback I can really think up in ma wee head, as you only really need to put serious efforts into securing that 1 box. ;p Now it is funny when someone does this wrongly, and locks themselves out of their own box. But thats always a good laugh for me I find. :)
  6. You should only allow access from certain ranges, where at all possible (usually always). Especially when considering critical systems. That will help you beat this problem fairly easily.
  7. What goods your brain with WiFi cancer? ;p I need one for work, and take it in car if doing a long drive. Thats about it.

    Buy me one :)

Good call. Everyone who has a smart car looks gay.
  9. My phone generally stays in my house. The way it should be. :) Actually, they keep terminating my sim cards because of lack of use. heh. It's like everyone forgot about US Telco's and the joy in illegal data trading they enjoy doing. The last thing I would want, is to be tagged like Digital Cattle, and have the Unique Identifier be the Connection String to said Telco. Marketing and Security are 2 extreme contrasts, as shown in this article and technology. If it's disturbing enough to happen in the UK, it's only a matter of time before the US joins the exploitation wave.
  10. Add Stubbs the Zombie meets Lassie to that. Where'd you get it from?
  11. That's, unfortunately pretty damn common in any game. I especially hate idiots who are too busy talking to actually play the game. I disable chat, and kill anyone I see chatting.
  12. In some ways it's kinda dubious, but I think it's a really cool app regardless if they use it for bad things or not.

I prefer to use VLC, over MPlayer as it very rarely every gives me any issues and I don't like MPlayer. On the subject of downloading, I found that installing Flashgot to your firefox, and setting this up with curl can help you mass download links in a single click. Something which is convenient if you ever leech from sites like *cough*forumw.org*cough*.
  17. We pay about about $10+ per gallon I guess, 60-80% of that goes straight to the government. It's not that we don't have access to our own oil either, we're just getting robbed.

Most of our workstations run Ubuntu by default, unless you install your own. I'm not a fan of the flashy stuff, but's it's built ontop of a good solid OS, so theres nothing much to complain about. That aside, if you are using a redhat type OS (centos / fedora included) you will find yum replaces apt.

I find aptitude a bit better than apt-get. I also find it easier to remember the commands. aptitude aptitude search $word aptitude install $program aptitude killyourparents etc. man is the best command for nix. :)

  21. Can't wait until companys like Phorm start selling your data to RIAA. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/02/29/phorm_roundup/ You guys already have some similar systems over the pond. Legal malware, killing the internet 1 ISP at a time. :)
