3DS Handheld

I heard the 3DS was up for demo @ Best Buy, so I swung by on my way home tonight. Off the bat, you'll see the system is around the size of a DS Lite, so us fattie DSi XL folks will also notice how small the screens are. :P

Model Screen Sizes

3DS:

3.53 in (90 mm), 800 x 240 px (effectively 400 x 240 WQVGA per eye) at 24 bit color Top Screen

3.02 in (77 mm), 320 x 240 QVGA at 24 bit color Bottom Screen

DSi XL:

4.2 in (107 mm), 256 x 192 px

DSi:

3.25 in (83 mm), 256 x 192 px

DS Lite & DS Phat:

3.0 in (76 mm), 256 x 192 px

For the demo, they have Pilotwings 3D on there. It will look very familiar to anyone who played the Wii Fit Plus hand-gliding game. As for the 3D effect, I recommend turning it off initially, then adjusting it until you see a good fit. It took me a few minutes before my eyes adjusted to the 3D, but once they did it was very apparent. I did notice after about 10 minutes as I walked out of the store, my eyes felt a little goofy and off. The system Graphics looked pretty much exact in respect to the Wii and horsepower.

If you are interested and around a store, I'd advise checking the system out. While I can see the 3D effect, I don't really see it being a sticking point, especially with the prospect of additional eye strain. So far, the most interesting feature is the 3DS shop and incoming various old school GBA and Genesis games.

Luckily, I should be pretty safe until the 3DS revision with bigger screens comes out, or better yet, they just put the same titles on the DSi Ware shop. My DSi XL is safe for now. :D

Yea I was wondering about eye strain. I walk out of 3D movies with a raging headache, although I know part of that is from the glasses. I just wonder if the games will be able to recognize the 3D'ness. Like... can you poke a 3D part with a stylus and the game pick that up? If not, what's the big deal supposed to be? Lol.

I didn't think so. That just seems... I dunno, I don't get what the big deal is supposed to be about it. I'll like the 3D craze when they make it not suck and not give me headaches. Lol.

3D TV's were all super advertised for a little bit and then they realized it was a big flop and consumers really didn't give a shit about them that much.

Especially when they try to sell crazy battery powered glasses with the sets for like $100 per pair.:icon_wacko:

Holy shit! Yea now that you mention it, I haven't seen a 3D tv advertised in a while. We had commercials for them a little bit. I'm surprised they just keep pushing it so much, I know A LOT of people that just don't care for the 3D. Not at the stage it's at anyway. It's gonna need a ton of work before it's at the point where I'll be interested. Like actual 3D projection or something with 0 glasses of any kind necessary... I'd probably be down for. Lol.

Although, I just saw an advertisement for the Sims on the 3DS... curious!

Hell yeah. I am digging on Nintendo already stopping the push for Devs to make games require 3D. Optional is all it should be, imo.

I'll get more interested in the 3DS when more games come out. Not for the 3D, but the specs of the new hardware in there. If they want that thing to sell over the long-term, they are going to need some amazing content. We'll see how much more devs can but out on a 3DS cart versus a regular DS cart though. ;)

Well. considering the 3DS hit like 6 months ago for $250, the Nintendo 3DS is dropping to $169.99 directly reduced by Nintendo.

I'll attach the quote, as 3DS first runners will get some 3DS shop content.

Nintendo of America today announced plans to drop the suggested retail price of its portable Nintendo 3DS™ system to $169.99 in the United States. The new price takes effect Aug. 12 and makes an outstanding value even better.

Building on the popularity of The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ 3D, which launched June 19, the upcoming game calendar for Nintendo 3DS is a Who's Who of iconic video game franchises. Star Fox 64™ 3D arrives on Sept. 9, followed by Super Mario™ 3D Land in November, Mario Kart™ 7 in December and Kid Icarus™: Uprising during the holiday season.

And don't forget that Nintendo 3DS has a bunch of fun features, including Nintendo Video™, the Nintendo eShop and access to Netflix, that make it a must-have video game system.

But what about the 830,000 of you who already own a Nintendo 3DS? You're some of Nintendo's most loyal customers, and we're rewarding you for getting in on the action early with not one, not 10, but 20 free downloadable games from the Nintendo eShop! Here's how it works:

The 20 free games are available to anyone who owns a Nintendo 3DS system and uses a wireless broadband Internet signal to connect to the Nintendo eShop at least once before 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Aug. 11. These users will automatically be registered in the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program. The program contains two elements:

1. Starting Sept. 1, Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors will be able to download 10 NES™ Virtual Console™ games at no charge and before they are available in the Nintendo eShop to the general public. These games, including Super Mario Bros.™, Donkey Kong Jr.™, Balloon Fight™, Ice Climber™ and The Legend of Zelda™, are slated to become paid downloadable games, but Ambassadors get them early for free. Once the paid versions of the games are posted to the Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost.

2. By the end of 2011, Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. These include games like Yoshi's Island™: Super Mario™ Advance 3, Mario Kart™: Super Circuit, Metroid™ Fusion, WarioWare™, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong™. These games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future.

Price cut is dandy and all, but I still love my DSi XL. Just started some Dragon Quest IX this week. 3DS and I can talk, after a bigger screen version is out, along with some ultra games that utilize that new hardware.

Lol! I totally just read that on Facebook. It made me chuckle... I hope no one in here bought one at full price. x_x I still don't like the idea and wish companies would give up on this 3D shit.

Luckily, our household didn't become a victim. :)

Looks like the Ambassador Program has been extended to the 20th, so if you just got a 3DS, you can still get some mad free games from the Virtual Shop.

Have played with my friends, wasn't to impressed with the 3D effect feels more like a depth effect more then anything which I probably wouldn't use at all. Will wait for a new model dump and some games then I might consider the jump.

Wow. Based on some rumors. it looks like the 3DS add-ons might get crazy.

A smaller focus on 3D gaming, $10 add-on 2nd analog stick, and a 2012 refresh are the rumored additions. I'm not sure how an add-on stick would work for the handheld. The only feasible use I could see on DSi games, is if the 2nd stick were to emulate touch screen controls. As for the refresh, the 'Lite' or revised version is always in the books for Nintendo handhelds. I'm curious to see how this will unfold.

Confirmation of the 2nd analog stick has come. Info @ NeoGaf thread.

The 2nd analog stick looks to remain optional for awhile, and will require a single AAA battery to run it. As the attached image will convey, thing is pretty damn fugly. :o At least it looks moderately comfortable to hold, via top underside shot.

Also FYI, the DSi XL and DSi prices also dropped, following the 3DS price cut. Pure curiosity is, when the 3DS revised model is coming out. I'm doing OK on the XL, but do know an eventual cut off will happen, once an awesome games comes out, 3DS only.

It'd have to be just about free before I'd pick one up. I barely play my regular DS as is. Plus, like Toucan said, it's more of a mindfuck than actual 3D. Headaches should not cost that much money, lol.
